Last week a new powdered alcohol product “Palcohol” was approved for sale in the USA. Oddly enough the inventor and founder has designed the product for use on those long hiking trips in the mountains. WTF? After dominating an intimidating peak, the last thing that I really feel I need is to get my drink on…
“When I hike, I like to have a drink when I reach my destination. Palcohol is so light and easy to pack. It’s perfect for hiking and backpacking,” founder Mark Phillips said.
The green light was provided by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau on Wednesday after protracted negotiations between the authority and the product’s designers. Somehow I suspect they were concerned that ‘snorting’ might become a route of administration. And why not, any chance to bypass the liver right? (apparently it would take over an hour to snort a standard drink).
So how do we use it? Well Palcohol is sold in single serve bags. Just rip the top open, add water, mix and then drink through a straw. Sounds wonderful doesn’t it. Palcohol is available in a few different flavours including vodka and rum and three cocktail versions: Cosmopolitan, Margarita and Lemon Drop.
I wonder how long it will be before some chancer decides to bring Palcohol or a me-too product to Australia? For the sake of beer, I hope that day never comes.
