Whilst scoping the bottle shop in search of the recent Penfolds St Henri 2010 Shiraz release, I stumbled across the Mad Brewers latest release Garden De Paradisi Witbier (6.2% abv). Being a fan of this offshoot from the Malt Shovel brewery, I had high hopes and this offering didn’t fail to deliver.
Whilst the Witbier style is usually less than exciting this beer differs in that the alcohol has been bumped up to a healthy 6.2% abv and the unique ingredient of a West African native spice called Grains of Paradise being added. this spice is often used by witch doctors in their rituals… hence the beer has its own special touch of Voodoo. The usual dosing levels of citrus peel have also been amplified (mandarin and lime peel) to produce a unique beer with nice citrus aroma and a malty finish. Perfect for summer. The pint size bottle is awesome as well. This is definitely a beer to seek, even if you are not a fan of the traditional Witbier style.
